Garnet adalah sekelompok group mineral silika lebih tepatnya adalah dalam kategori Nesosillicate yang sudah dikenal sebagai batu permata sejak jaman perunggu, senyawa kimiawi pembentuk mineral ini adalah X₃Y₂(SiO₄)₃ dan sistem kristalnya adalah Cubic rhombic dodecahedron, icositetrahedron, Garnet memiliki sifat fisik yang sama dan bentuk kristal yang sama tetapi komposisi kimia yang berbeda.

Berikut adalah macam-macam jenis Spesies (veritas) Garnet yang memiliki keragaman warna yang berbeda, telah dikelompokkan sbb:

Pyrope (Garnet merah, biasanya selalu tampil dengan tercampur warna coklat)
Almandine/Almandite (Garnet merah dengan pengaruh warna violet)
Rhodolite (Garnet Merah-Rose atau Merah keunguan, adalah varian antara Pyrope dan Almandine)
Spessartine/Spessartite (Garnet oranye atau oranye kecoklatan)
Grossularite (Leuco Garnet, Hessonite, Tsavorite)
Leuco garnet (Garnet bening (tanpa warna))
Hessonite (Garnet kuning, kuning kecoklatan, biasa disebut sbg Cinnamon Garnet)
Tsavorite (Garnet hijau - menyerupai warna Jamrud)
Uvarovite (Garnet hijau mengandung chromium berbentuk druzie)
Andradite (Demantoid, Melanite, Topazolite)
Demantoid (Garnet langka berwarna hijau hidup (Vivid Green) dengan luster menyamai berlian)
Melanite (Garnet Hitam pekat, biasa disebut "Titanian Andradite")
Topazolite (Garnet yang mirip Topaz berwarna lemon green)

Spesies garnet ditemukan dalam berbagai warna termasuk merah, oranye, kuning, hijau, biru, ungu, coklat, hitam, pink dan tanpa warna. Yang paling langka ini adalah yang berwarna biru "Blue Garnet", ditemukan pada akhir 1990-an di Bekily, Madagaskar.

Satu spesies garnet yang langka dan istimewa adalah Demantoid, garnet hijau dengan sebaran warna mulai dari hijau muda, hijau pupus, hijau tua sampai bluish green. Nama Demantoid berasal dari bahasa Belanda yang berarti "Diamond-Like / Seperti Berlian", memang sesuai dengan namanya demantoid mempunyai ciri khas memancarkan api berlian meskipun cahaya yang ditrerimanya lemah demantoid tetap dapat memancarkan sparkling berlian api merah-hijau-kuning, inilah istimewanya jenis garnet ini dan tidak dimiliki oleh jenis garnet yang lain meskipun tsavorite juga jenis garnet hijau. Ciri yang lain adalah "horsetail inclusions", dalam kalangan kolektor batu permata langka, demantoid yang mempunyai inklusi seperti ekor kuda (horsetail inclusion) dihargai lebih mahal dibandingkan dengan yang tanpa inklusi ini meskipun secara kejernihan batu (clarity) yang minim inklusi akan lebih bersih dan bagus, tetapi karena salah satu ciri wajib yang "terkadang harus ada" pada demantoid adalah "horsetail inclusion" maka sering menjadi perdebatan jika demantoid tanpa horsetail inclusion dianggap bukan demantoid. Biasanya demantoid origin Russia sering menampilkan inklusi ini itulah sebabnya demantoid Russia dihargai lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan demantoid asal Namibia, Africa.

Color Change Garnet adalah Garnet spesial yang mengalami perubahan warna bila mendapat pencahayaan dari sumber cahaya yang berbeda (cahaya lampu pijar/incandescent dan cahaya dari lampu putih/daylight/candescent)
